Sunday Sketches - December Christmas Cards

Check back in a couple of weeks to see how the sketches becames reality. It's a little hard to show off Christmads cards because I don't want to ruin the surprise for my friends. Two of these sketches didn't work out as planned...but that's why it's a sketch!

Autumn Stamping Project--A Variety of Cards!

Whew! I didn't think that I would finish my September project, which turned into an October project and finally became the November project.

As we cope with working from home, missed loved ones and celebrations, I want to remind everyone that crafting of any kind is so restorative. A few minutes a day by yourself or over over Zoom--the arts keep us in touch with ourselves and others. They allow us to indulge in our imaginations and fantasy lives, help us grow confidence and give ourselves a bit of control too :)

Here are the supplies I used to make four cards:

The idea I had in mind changed a little bit. Stamping the wheat stooks in Peekaboo Peach pushed them into the background. I used a 2" circle punch to make a mask and sponged around it for the sunset.

Originally, Life is Beautiful was not on my to-buy list, but I realized it had a lot of potential. I stamped the leaves on and off with Cinnamon Cider and Peekaboo Peach for a layered look and then sponged the empty space with Peekaboo Peach. It's a little hard to see in the picture.

Sometimes when I have a hard time getting started, I just stamp! This is how I ended up with a lot of die cuts from the Autumn Goodness set. Again, the leaves from Life is Beautiful made a nice ground and some more Peekaboo Peach sponging knocked back the brightness of Very Vanilla. The two colours go surprisingly well together, which was a nice surprise.

I wasn't sure how the fourth card would turn out, so I just stamped all over the Very Vanilla panel. A little Seaside Spray ink on the panel and the plaid DSP brought a cool green to the card. Add a doily from the stash, and voila!

Now that my autumn cards are done, I can finally start on some Christmas designs :)

August Stamping Project - Label It!

Every so often I need a reminder that stamping is more than just card making or scrapbooking. A friend gifted me a jar of homemade jam and later asked if I had the label stamps to go with a particular punch. I did not, but I could do one better!

For this project you will need:
  • Stamps with a small pattern
  • Label paper or plain paper or Whisper White cardstock
  • Computer and printer
  • Tear tape adhesive
These are rather loose guidelines. Sometimes I describe how to make something and other times I describe how to make it yours. Plus, there are lots of labelmaker programs out there.

If you have labels...
  • Open Microsoft Word or visit Avery’s website, http://www.avery.com.
  • Enter the label code and follow the instructions to create a sheet of labels. You may need to create an Avery account.
  • Design a label with your chosen text such as “From me to you” or “From my kitchen to yours”. Make sure to leave some room at the edges to stamp.
  • Print labels according to your printer's settings.
If you don’t have labels...
  • Open Microsoft Word or visit Avery’s website, http://www.avery.com.
  • Choose a label template that matches a punch that you have, such as a tag or a circle.
  • Design a label that will fit within the space of the label template and ensure that you have left some space around the text to stamp around the words. For example, if you have a 2" circle punch, a 1-1.25" label design would work well.
  • Make a test print on plain paper and see if the design fits the punch. This way, you won’t waste good cardstock. Make adjustments as necessary. When you are satisfied, print on Whisper White, Very Vanilla or plain paper.
  • Punch out the labels.
Additionally, if you are handy with CorelDraw, Adobe PhotoShop or Adobe Illustrator, you can make a page of labels in those programs too. However you do it, your goal is to get a page of labels like this:
Page of labels
Punch them out!

Get stamping! Choose stamps that have small designs and pick a contrasting or complimentary ink.

Variety of printed and stamped labels

A current set that works well is Pattern Play and I also used the discontinued set Budding Borders.

Add some tear tape adhesive to the back and you're ready to go. Don’t forget you can add embellishments too like ribbon or string, especially if giving as a gift.

There you have it—a fun project that you can label your gifts with or make a gift for others. Did you know before that you can print on Stampin’s Up’s Whisper White or Very Vanilla cardstock? I have used both an inkjet and a laser printer with great results. See you in September!

July Stamping Project - Welcome Baby Cards

TIme for the big reveal of July's stamping project--welcome baby cards! I never have enough of these on hand and I'll probably make a few more down the road. I picked Mint Macaron cardstock because it's gender neutral. All it wil take is a little extra colour to personalize it if the occasion calls for it. The one with the pink banner was sent off to our friends who welcomed a baby girl recently.

Fable Friends is discontinued but there are all sorts of cute stamps that can be used instead like Wildly Happy.

Sometimes it's easy to make all the cards the same, but I wanted each one to be different and try out some different ideas kicking around the ol' brain. Cinnamon Cider was the logical choice for inking the animals and I liked the contrast with Very Vanilla cardstock. A matching pencil crayon in the stash was perfect for their fur. Usually Crumbcake is my go to brown, but sometimes it can be too subtle. And speaking of subtle, I tried out some Soft Sea Foam for just a hint of colour on the base of two of the cards.

One of the larger rectangles from the Ornate Layers dies had the vintage look that went with the rabbit and squirrel. Fable Friends always reminds me of Peter Rabbit :-)

Next, I used up some scrap pieces of Very Vanilla for the big hello on two cards.

The big Hello is from another discontinued set, Hello Friend. Sometimes it's a puzzler as to how one can have SO MANY STAMPS and not have JUST THE RIGHT STAMP. LOL! Hello is perfect, anyhow, since everyone is eager to meet the new little person :-) The ink is Shaded Spruce.

I die cut a bunch of branches from the Birds and More set plus Forever Flourishing from Mint Macaron. Tone on tone can have a very pleasing look and is an effective way to add texture and layers to a card base.

I don't have anything that says Welcome Baby, so I had to handwrite it with a Cinnamon Cider Stampin' Write markerFortunately, I did have a congratulations stamp.

All these techniques were simple and fun to try out. I imagine I'll be doing them again for Christmas cards pretty soon! Until next time...

Sunday Sketch - July Stamping Project - Welcome Baby

Since I post my projects at the end of the month, I decided to share the sketch for them at the beginning of the month. Check back in a couple of weeks to see how the sketch becomes reality!

As you might have guessed, this is a new baby card. Surprisingly, I don't have anything in the stash that says welcome or new baby, so I'll have to improvise a bit. The stamps are from a discontinued set, Fable Friends. They're the closest new baby stamps I have.

By the way, it's July! That means it's time for BONUS DAYS!!!. Spend $60 CAD before taxes and shipping and receive a $6 coupon to spend in August. You'll want those coupons because the holiday catalogue is coming out in August instead of September this year. Oooooh!

March Stamping Project: Introducing Wonderful Watercolour!

Many cardmakers have watercolours of some sort in the stash, but never quite get around to using them. There's so much to love about watercolour--the transparent look, artsy splash or vibrant hues. However...watercolour can be intimidating!

Many people first experience watercolours as children and remember soggy paper, colours that turned brown instead of beautiful and the sheer difficulty of getting the look right. Here's a simple truth--you don't have to be your childhood.

Watercolour pencils and aqua painters are a good first step in reclaiming your creativity or overcoming your fear. Recently I brainstormed three techniques for watercolour pencils. It's a lot of information, so I'll spread them out over a few posts and maybe some videos. For now, here are some supplies you may want to stock up on. Remember, Sale-A-Bration ends March 31st, so now's time to make a qualifying order and get a freebie or two!

Beware Counterfeit Stampin' Up! Products

Usually when people hear the word "counterfeit", they think of funny money or luxury handbags that look a little off. Would you believe that the crafting world is plagued by counterfeits too?

Believe it!

You may have come across Stampin' Up! stamps and dies for sale on online shopping venues that look like, but are not Stampin' Up!. Not only do counterfeits hurt demonstrators and infringe on Stampin' Up!'s intellectual property, but customers may receive an inferior product.

Counterfeiting is time consuming to combat and Stampin' Up! works hard to keep on top of it. If you spot SU! items that you think might be counterfeit, you can send an email to Infringements@stampinup.com with:
  • A link to the webpage where counterfeit products are shown or listed (direct links are preferred over screenshots)
  • Name of the stamp set/product (if known)
  • Any other relevant details

OK, now that the serious part is over, did you know that Stampin' Up!'s stamps and inks are made in the United States? Superstar seller Tami White was fortunate to visit the Kenab, Utah facility and kindly posted a video of her tour online!

January Stamping Project: 2020 Occasions Catalogue Sampler Swap

It's been a while since I did a swap--and this time it was another sampler swap. Each stamper picks a stamp set and makes five cards or papercraft items using the stamps. You don't have to use every stamp on every time. I picked French Countryside from the new 2020 Occasions Mini-Catalogue. To be honest, I didn't put much thought into my choice until I started making some sketches. Then, everything I planned went out the window!

Whereas my previous sampler swap had too many sentiments, French Countryside has no sentiments. I'll talk about each design in the order that I made them.

When in doubt, stamp it out. After I felt stuck for the first card, I stamped all over a 12x12" sheet of Purple Posy cardstock. France has a huge textile history, so I tried to make it look like antique fabric by repeating the motifs. The die cut is from Detailed Bands and the sentiment is from Butterfly Gala stamped in Pretty Peacock. I actually researched French country style for this swap and the colours tend to be very neutral or distressed. I tried embossing the front panel with the Subtle embossing folder, hated it, and then just sponged on some Crumbcake ink instead.

With card number two, I went back to basics with a simple cartoon style layout. The benefit is that each stamp is highlighted on its own. It was quick to cut the Very Vanilla panels once I figured out the dimensions. The base is Gray Granite cardstock stamped in Pretty Peacock with the All Wired Up background stamp. A little pink pencil crayon over the images gave them a boost. I did some research on French countryside colours and it turns out that neutral and subtle shades are just what I needed.

Stampin Up French Countryside Card

Like my papercrafters, I hoard paper. It's so precious! So pretty! I found some leftover current DSP and cut them into front panels. I still didn't know what this card was going to look like, but at least doing something would help me get over my fear of a blank card. These two stamps looked great together, so again I used Pretty Peacock. Pretty Peacock pretty much goes with everything! The hello is from Free As a Bird and the dies are from the Stitched Nested Labels set. This card let me use up some more leftover cardstock with the punched leaves.

Stampin Up French Countryside Card

The clock started ticking on getting the swaps done, so the fourth card was super simple. No sentiments. Just the house stamped in Crumbacake ink on Very Vanilla cardstock, followed by a die cut, embossed oval frame from the Heirloom Frames Dies And 3D Embossing Folder set. This was my first time using the set and it was a little tricky. Die cut first, then emboss. Going with tone on tone or a subtle like Purple Posy worked great!

Stampin Up French Countryside Card

Sometimes planning interferes with action and with this final swap card I used my Stamparatus and a paper mask to create a scene. However, I needed to put a lot of work in to pull it all off. I used sponging and pencil crayon to give the background some oomph. Then I went over the stamps with a mechanical pencil to help with the contrast. Mix blue and orange and you get brown...hence my use of Terracotta Tile for the label. I'm not happy with the label - it feels big. An ornate die would have looked better, I think. Sometimes one gets a little more arty than crafty :-D

Swapping was a ton of fun. I enjoyed the sets I received in return and I'll share them another day :-)

Don't forget about Paper Pumpkin!

LOL, it's easy to forget that Paper Pumpkin exists. It's Stampin' Up's monthly mystery subscription box. I received one when I became a demo years ago, but I only recently subscribed after Mom showed an interest in cardmaking. The kits come with adhesive dots, but I prefer my favourite tear tap. Regardless, you're good to go!

You get an acrylic stamping block in your first order, so make sure not to throw it away :) Each kit may vary--cards, treat boxes, ornaments--but they all contain an exclusive stamp set. There are more than enough supplies to make all the projects.

You don't even have to make it like the picture :) You can use the die cuts with other Stampin' Up! items from the regular catalogue as the colours coordinate. "Alternative" projects can be found all over Facebook or Pinterest. For instance, Mom and I made cards instead of gift tags from the November 2019 Winter Gifts box and I gave December's box to Mom so she would have the perfect cards on hand. I introduced a friend of mine to the world of stamping in only 15 minutes with February's box :D Paper Pumpkins can be shared with anyone! Cardmaking can be really intimidating and people easily build confidence when they have success early on.

Be sure to subscribe by the tenth of every month to get that month's kit. Shipping is included in the price plus you can suspend a subscription or cancel anytime, so give Paper Pumpkin a try!

Purple Posy Tips from Stampin' Up!

As many of you may recall, Purple Posy ink pads just were not to be. The markers and paper are still available, however.

However, since Purple Posy is a cousin to Highland Heather, you can still try and get the look. Stampin' Up! offered these tips recently:
  • Stamp on Purple Posy Cardstock (item 150881) using VersaMark Ink (item 102283) to create a tone-on-tone look.
  • Heat emboss using Clear Stampin’ Emboss Powder (item 109130) on Purple Posy Cardstock.
  • Add 6–8 drops of Highland Heather Classic Stampin’ Ink Refill (item 147167) to a Stampin’ Spritzer (item 126185), then dilute with rubbing alcohol to reach your desired color. Spritz the mixture onto your project.
  • Use Highland Heather Classic Stampin’ Ink (item 147103) with a Sponge Brayer (item 141714), Stamping Sponge (item 141337), Aqua Painter (item 103954), or stamped off. These methods look especially great on Purple Posy Cardstock!
  • Color cling stamps using a Purple Posy Stampin’ Write Marker (item 150079) before stamping.
  • Color stamped images using either light or dark Purple Posy Stampin’ Blends (item 149566).
  • Stamp on Purple Posy Cardstock using VersaMark Ink to create a tone-on-tone look.

Time to Sale-A-Brate!

Stampers always have something to look forward to in the New Year--Stampin' Up!'s Sale-A-Bration. There are usually two rounds of nifty rewards and the first one is pretty sweet, with stamps, punches, dies, paper and more--check it out!. Sale-A-Bration runs from January 3-March 31, 2020.

The fun part of being a demonstrator, even a hobby demo, is that I can order products in advance. I chose these rewards: Thoughtful Blooms and matching punch, Lovely Lily Pad and the Lily Pad Impressions paper. The Lily Pad Impressions paper is quite bold and I'm not sure I have a big enough personality to use it, but we'll see!

Sale-A-Bration rewards
2020 Sale-A-Bration Rewards

I couldn't resist getting these stamps from the 2020 Occasions Mini-Catalogue. The mini-catalogue runs from January 3 to June 2, 2020, so there is lots of time to order. If you love punches, there are loads to choose from like the Heartfelt Bundle. I bought Special Someone as I'm an animal lover and Breathtaking Bouquet because it's a fabulous giant floral stamp with so much possibilities.

Stay tuned for some sampler swap fun from me and my Ink-Cited Canadians team mates!
